 b_300_200_16777215_00_images_o.jpgThe first and second seminars in P24’s How to Cover Series were held in Ankara and Eskişehir, on March 18 and March 19 respectively. The series are supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.

Trainer Erkan Saka, an assistant professor at Bilgi University's Communications Department, spoke about the evolution of the Internet as a corporate dominated environment leaving less space to individual citizens. However, he said tools online still existed for creating a civil space free of corporate or governmental influence, adding that citizen themselves need to carve out and shape that space  using collaborative tools of knowledge production and sharing.

Social media and communications expert Kenan Dursun spoke extensively about productivity tools making social media usage effective. Şevket Uyanık, a communications expert, spoke about the legal aspects of Protection of Personal Data and online safety tools to ensure secure communication. He also briefly spoke about tools that can be used to verify fake news stories.

In Ankara, Aylin Aydoğan, an academic who was recently expelled from her position at the Ankara University’s Communications Department, also made a theoretical  presentation on cyberbullying. She said cyber bullying is best fought against by increasing overall media literacy and promoting a critical outlook in education. She also said social media companies should be held responsible for any personal damage that might arise from using these platforms.
