The Foundation

Rooted in the legacy of Friedrich Naumann, advancing liberal democracy worldwide since 1958.

Friedrich Naumann

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty bears the name of the German liberal politician, theologian, and publisher Friedrich Naumann (1860–1919). A visionary advocate for civic education and political liberalism, Naumann believed that a free society could only flourish when citizens were equipped with knowledge, critical thinking, and a commitment to democratic values.

His work laid the intellectual groundwork for a tradition of liberal political education that the Foundation carries forward today — in Germany, across Europe, and around the world.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty carries forward a proud tradition of liberal political education that began with its namesake in late nineteenth-century Germany. Friedrich Naumann himself was a pastor, politician, and public intellectual who championed civic engagement, individual freedom, and democratic participation as essential pillars of a just society. Today, the foundation applies these same principles across the globe, working with local partners to strengthen democratic institutions, promote human rights, and advance market-based economic reforms. Through seminars, publications, and exchange programs, the foundation helps citizens develop the critical thinking skills needed to hold governments accountable and shape their own futures. This mission remains as urgent today as it was a century ago.

A core focus of the foundation's work in Turkey and the broader region involves fostering dialogue across cultural and political divides. Recognizing that liberal democracy thrives on open debate and mutual understanding, the foundation brings together activists, academics, journalists, and civil society organizations to discuss pressing issues such as rule of law, religious freedom, gender equality, and minority rights. These gatherings provide safe spaces for diverse perspectives to be heard and debated constructively. The foundation also supports projects aimed at combating hate speech and discriminatory discourse, promoting secular governance, and strengthening the capacity of local NGOs. By building bridges between different communities, the foundation contributes to a more tolerant and pluralistic public life.

The foundation's approach is grounded in the belief that individual liberty and personal responsibility are inseparable. Economic freedom, fair competition, and open markets are seen as prerequisites for prosperity and social progress, while strong protections for civil liberties ensure that no citizen is left behind. The foundation works across multiple sectors including energy, education, and local governance, always emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability. Interns and young professionals are welcomed into the foundation's offices in Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities, gaining hands-on experience in liberal advocacy and project management. Through these efforts, the foundation nurtures a new generation of leaders committed to building free, open, and democratic societies.
